HerbElixa DOO is a company founded in 2018 with an aim to develop and produce herbal products based on medicinal plants. Our main focus is development of products based on essential oils that can help in treatment of different health disorders and diseases. Also, we put special emphasize in development of products that can be used for eradication of microorganisms that are resistant to available therapies, such as Helicobacter pylori or Candida spp.
Essential oils, the basis of our products, are complex mixtures of numerous volatile compounds, obtained by hydrodistillation from aromatic medicinal plants. The structural diversity of these compounds enables them to work synergistically and through different mechanisms, thus it is practically impossible for bacteria microorganisms to develop resistance towards all of them at the same time. That is the main advantage of essential oils in comparison to other pure single compounds, beside their natural origin and low toxicity. Additionally, despite their great potential essential oils are very poorly exploited in pharmaceutical industry. For all these reasons, HerbElixa have chosen essential oils as basis of its products.
Our products are exclusively based on scientific results, primarily stemming from 10 and more years of research done by HerbElixa co-founders: three researchers and university professors that already built successful careers in science. All HerbElixa products represent innovation and are unique because they are produced by our own recipes and methodologies.
To obtain high quality of products we aim to control the whole process of manufacturing, from row plant material production to final product packaging and distribution. As raw material we use only plants cultivated by local farmers using organic agriculture methods, thus supporting rural transformation.
Co-founders of HerbElixa are Dr Nataša Simin, Dr Ivana Beara and Dr Marija Lesjak.
Dr Natasa Simin holds PhD in Biochemistry and is employed at University of Novi Sad Faculty of Sciences, Serbia, as an Assistant Professor. She has more than 15 years of experience in research in the field of biochemistry of medicinal plants. Her research interests are isolation and chemical characterization of biologically active compounds from plants and investigation of their biological activities, as well as development of new formulations based on medicinal plants with high potential against different pathological conditions. She participated on several national and international scientific projects as a researcher and manager assistant. She published 25 research papers in peer-review journals.
Dr Ivana Beara is Associate Professor at University of Novi Sad Faculty of Sciences, Serbia. She finished her PhD in Biochemistry in 2010. For more than 15 years, her research field is biochemistry of medicinal plants, particularly biological activities of natural compounds and experimental methods for evaluation of their potential. She published 27 research papers in international peer review journals, and participated in several national and international scientific projects. Her current research is focused on application of biologically active compounds in prevention and treatment of diseases, and development of new, naturally-based and scientifically proven formulations with health benefits.
Dr Marija Lesjak is Associate Professor at the University of Novi Sad Faculty of Sciences, Serbia. She obtained two PhDs. First one at the University of Novi Sad Faculty of Sciences, Serbia, in 2011 in biochemistry, and second one at the University College London, UK, in 2015 in molecular biology. The scientific work of Dr Lesjak is directed towards an assessment of biological activity of plants in in vivo and in vitro systems, and their potential to be used as valuable row material for pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industry. She received several prestigious awards in Serbia and abroad for her scientific engagement: UCL Overseas Research Scholarship for her studies at the UCL (2011-2014); Willmar Schwabe award for the best Young Researcher in the field of natural products research (2011); Award for the best young researcher at the Faculty of Sciences University of Novi Sad, Serbia (2015); the “Start-up for Science” scholarship awarded by Philip Morris in cooperation with the Center for Development Leadership in Serbia (2016); National Scholarship L ‘Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science (2016); Special Award “Dr Zoran Đinđić” for young scientist and researcher for the overall scientific contribution awarded by University of Novi Sad, Serbia (2018). She is author of numerous scientific publications in renowned international journals.
